Why are thick fabrics so difficult to sew? Everything is bigger – bigger uphill slopes and downhill drops for every seam you sew over, and bigger sideways dips every time you try to stitch along the fabric edge. Each one of these leaves your sewing machine foot slanted, which adds extra strain to your needle. This is why it’s easier to break your needle or make a thread mess. How to fix it? Easy! All you need to do is to stabilise your presser foot. This tutorial will show you several ways you can go about doing that, as well as talk you through some of the extra considerations you might want to make when sewing thicker fabrics. There’s even a video tutorial.
